The Laguna Inter-LGU 2017: Governor's Cup Opens

Biñan, Laguna – Twenty-Six (26) teams from different municipalities gathered at the Alonte Sports Arena last May 17, 2017 to participate in the annual Inter-LGU (Local Government Unit) basketball tournament.

Spearheaded by the Provincial Government of Laguna and sponsored by Laguna Water, the league’s vision is to promote camaraderie and build stronger relationships through the sport most loved by the people – from San Pedro all the way to Pangil.

Holding a bigger opening ceremonies this year, the Alonte Sports Arena was filled with warmth and excitement as the program highlighted the best muse segment – won by Ms. Mary Joi Pasion of Sta. Rosa, and the annual three-point shootout – won this year by Jason Tuazon of Sta. Cruz.

The festivities also featured a special dance number from the PWU Warriors. In addition, several esteemed guests were in attendance during this momentous event – Governor Ramil Hernandez, Vice Governor Atty. Katherine Agapay, Biñan Mayor Arman Dimaguila, Biñan Vice Mayor Angelo Alonte, Board Member Ruth Mariano Hernandez, Cavinti Mayor Milbert Oliveros, Board Members Benjo Agarao, Rai Ann San Luis, Carlo Almoro, and Provincial Administrator Dulce Rebanal amongst others.

The tournament kicked-off with the Laguna Blue Warriors, led by bigman Xerex Tocmo, squaring off against San Pedro, where the former emerged victorious, 86-70.

The defending champions, Biñan, meanwhile picked up where they left off as they breezed through Los Baños, 87-63, led by the reigning Most Valuable Player Fritz Del Rosario.

The long-day season opener concluded with Calamba winning over Sta. Cruz in a tightly-contested affair 70-66, and Rizal holding off Famy 77-68.

Ivan Mervin Orillaza (18) of Famy soars high for a lefty. He would finish with the game-high of 23 points, but would bow down to Rizal, 77-68 in the season opener.

 This year, the Governor’s cup introduced a new and unique tournament format – 26 teams classified into 3 brackets. The top 4 teams per bracket will advance to the Round-of-12 Playoffs. Winners of the aforementioned round will then march to the Round-of-6, then the Semifinal Round-of-3. The remaining teams will then battle it out in a Round-Robin format, where the top 2 who will emerge will enter the much-awaited championship game with a bountiful cash prize.

Succeeding games are held every Wednesday, from 1pm-7-pm at various basketball gymnasiums across Laguna.

The tournament is organized by Kings of the Court as it promises a more dynamic and interactive overall player experience this year.
