Missing the court | Game worn basketball jerseys, shoes from local athletes - the game changer in one man's initiative to reach out to his community

We've featured many stories of different groups of people coming together for a good cause. Players, coaches, team owners, professionals, and many others who opened the floodgates of help for the ones in need during these times.

In this edition of #MissingTheCourt, featured in this article is a unique story of one man, whose random idea of helping his community became a huge difference-maker in the midst of the health crisis.

The inspiring story of Eufil Mark Souribio, a lifetime sports fan, a player in different recreational basketball leagues, and a shoe collector for three years, who was sitting in his house and cleaning up his kicks when the thought of what he can do to help came about.

"To be honest yung Sapatos for a Cause was just a random decision that I’ve made while cleaning my shoes one time. Napaisip lang ako bigla na I have more than enough shoes for myself, bakit hindi ko gamitin to para ipa-auction to raise funds para kahit papaano habang walang ginagawa during ECQ, I can help din sa mga kabarangay ko dito na alam at kita kong hirap sa buhay dahil no work no pay sila." said Souribio, who played in one of Kings of the Court's tournaments in the past.

Sharing his blessings didn't come at a high cost as his heart to serve and him having friends from different sports leagues in the country, were more than enough to boost the campaign he started.

"Naisip ko din baka yun yung use ng sapatos ko, para magamit na way pantulong sa iba. Sa jersey for a cauase naman same thing lang din after sapatos for a cause, sabi ko di pa din sapat dami pa din nangangailangan eh. Meron akong friends na playing sa MPBL so nagtry ako magtanong sa kanila kung may extra game worn jersey sila then from there nagtuloy tuloy na."

One player after the other, help came from the players that he's friends with and from more people who are connected to these athletes.

"Tinulungan din nila ako to reach out sa ibang palyers na di ko kilala. Nakakatuwa kasi lahat sila gusto makatulong kaya kahit may mga sentimental values yung jersey nila eh pinili pa din nilang ibigay to sakin to be used sa jersey for a cause auction campaign ko"

The rise of players donating jerseys and shoes, plus other goods also paved the way for a set of individuals (non-players) who decided to join the movement and contribute for this cause. An outpour of help that amazed Souribio as he reflected on the ongoing movement.

"Siguro yung nakaka-amaze sa kanila is yung willingness nila to donate yung gamit na alam mong may importansya sa kanila and nakakatuwa yung ikaw yung nagbigay ng way sa kanila para makatulong din sila sa pagdonate ng shoes or jersey nila. Para halos lahat sila kasi willing at gusto makatulong din pero di nila alam i what way so thru jersey and sapatos for a cause nakatulong at nakapag contribute sila."

When asked if there was one story that stands out from the donations that came in, the proud project lead bared that the success of the movement is the great story overall for him.

"Lahat sila nagstand out for me dahil sa puso nila na makatulong pero yung pinaka nag stand out for me is yung mga players at mga tao na kusang magme-message sakin and sasabihin nila “idol may extra jersey ako dito” or “idol may extra shoes ako dito...sana makatulong” bukod pa diyan yung iba nagdo-donate sakin directly ng cash at minsan, ilang sacks of rice."

Who would have thought that a fan-friend habit he's been doing for years, would later become an avenue for a movement that will help his barangay and some parts of General Trias in Cavite.

"I thank God for using me na maging instrument to be an avenue para sa mga gustong tumulong. Di naman sobrang dami shoes ko pero sabi ko nga more than enough na to the point na di ko naman na nagagamit lahat, pero I really love collecting at buying sneakers so ginawa kong paraan yun na ishare din sa iba yung pagcocollect ko ng sneakers thru sapatos for a cause. Hilig ko naman even before yung pag arbor ng jerseys sa mga friend kong players, so ‘yun why not gawin kong way yung pag arbor ng jersey at ipa-auction to raise funds and thank God it worked." said the overwhelemed Souribio.

As of writing, the fundraising activity is nearing the 40K mark, aside from other goods donated by generous individuals. The long list of players and non-players gathered humble names, and Souribio wants to thank the following:

One man's simple idea and a heart to serve proves that more than money, the main tool needed in reaching out to the community in a tough season such as the stretch we're all in - is the willingness to go out there and make it happen.

Souribio is yet another example of a team player, dropping much needed assists as great help in our ongoing battle against COVID-19 and its effects to our fellow Filipinos.
