Brotherhood matters a lot in basketball and this perfectly fits to JCI Manila's statement for this year #everybrothercounts as it commenced the 2019 JCI Manila Basketball League last Sunday at The Upper Deck Lifestyle Center in Pasig City.

Battling for this year, 10 ballclubs participated in the main league: CSO Honda Mobile Minds Inc., Hamza, KTT, FRS Thatcher, Starpay, CHIGO, Henry's Toyota, KCM PYS, TNL, Hunters 1, and Klimex - and another five teams composed the JCI Manila D-league competition. That is for a total of 233 players who will play competitive basketball for a cause.

Known for helping people through their community projects, JCI Manila did not forget to include their mission in this basketball tournament as each team has submitted their desired project as part of the requirements in joining the JCI Manila Basketball League.

“The reason why we have the JCI Manila Basketball League is to bring people together and foster camaraderie. At the same time, especially for this year, we are tasking every team to embark on a project as a requirement” stated by JCI Manila President LA Sevilla.

Founded on May 11, 1948 at Escolta Manila, JCI Manila was built to help young people to become better leaders and become a source of positive change in the community.

As one of their projects for their members, JCI Manila established the JCI Manila Basketball League 20 years ago and started with only four teams. Jumping to the present time, the league has grown tremendously and became a very serious but healthy competition. In the pre-season, they conducted the JCI Manila Basketball League Draft Night to welcome the new faces in the tournament.

Formidable individuals were also present in the league, such as Christian Luanzon, Mon Jose, and BJ Manalo, and others who have played in the college leagues like UAAP and NCAA, which only proved how heavy the battles are going to be for this year.

“Yung mga team owners natin, they really take this seriously. They hired strength and conditioning coaches as well as past PBA/UAAP/NCAA coaches for the team. Alam mo talagang they invested their time and resources for the league. Kumbaga, kahit hindi sila kumikita dito, they really take pride in trying to win every game,” Sevilla said. “We expect a very competitive season. These 10 equally competitive teams, were able to draft really talented rookies, so this will definitely be an action packed season.”

Sevilla also shared a true to life story of one of their players and how the JCI Manila Basketball League has changed his vision in life, especially in lending a helping hand to the people in need.

“We have a story of a player before. Naglalaro lang siya sa basketball league namin and was not that active sa organization, he was given the opportunity to head a project one time and made it successful. This was the story of the Field of Dreams project wherein we converted part of Smokey Mountain into a baseball field which have now provided scholarship opportunities to the youth in Smokey Mountain. By playing in the league, he was encouraged and inspired to help the community,” he narrated.

This kind of inspiring story gave JCI Manila a reason to continue its basketball tournament and create more projects that would benefit the community.

As Sevilla concluded, he said that, “At the end of the day, playing the sport that we love while helping others is a kind of win-win situation we would love to have. That is JCI Manila basketball. It’s more than a game!”
