The IHI Explorers have already seen it all since the advent of the Ortigas Basketball League in 2006, but they’re still chasing that elusive title up until now.

According to team representative Alvin Tan, the squad has been finding its way to make it to the top since their highest-ever finish was only settling for second place against Chiyoda during their sophomore season.

What made things worse for the squad is that they had to go through a short hiatus due to the lack of participants which may have stopped their momentum back then.

“Sa 2006 kami sumali and isa kami sa pioneers. For a time, nag lie low kami since kulang sa players. Nagstop kami ng almost two years,” said Alvin Tan.

Fast forward to today, the team is at the middle of the pack with a 2-3 record. Coach Louie Go sees a lot of potential in his team, and it’s just a matter of trusting the process.

With a team mixed with veterans and youngsters, the firm mentor is maximizing their collective basketball IQ by taking pages out of different playbooks.

“Gusto ko sana more on run-and-gun kami. But for now, hindi namin ine-expect yan from the team since konti lang bata namin. We are more on set plays - cutting and motion offense,” bared Coach Louie Go.

The team is led by the league’s top scorer in Jowaldo de Leon, who is posting a scoring norm of 25.8 points per game. However, other couldn’t consistently keep up due to their heavy workload and busy schedules.

“Since konti lang ‘yung mga players, minsan loaded sa trabaho. Sometimes we had to skip practices just to finish within the deadlines, pero naiintindihan naman ni Coach ‘yung sitwasyon namin,” said Alvin Tan.

Even with these circumstances, Alvin Tan and the rest of the crew would rather focus on the positives in joining the OBL, since it gives them a much needed getaway from the daily grind.

Moreover, the team is optimistic that they’ll reach at least the quarterfinals this 2019 season.

“For me, ang mahalaga is nakaka exercise ako through this league para maka getaway paminsan minsan sa office work,” mentioned Tan.

“Magiging successful 2019 namin pag makapasok kami sa quarterfinals or semis. Challenging na sa amin ‘yun pag makaabot kami doon,” he concluded.
