1978/1985 took down 1995 in a dominant fashion via a 70-55 victory to announce their strength in the debut week of the Aquinas School Alumni Basketball League (ASABL) held at the Aquinas Gym in San Juan City last Saturday.

1995 did not get the chance to gain the upper hand as 1978/1985 wasted no time in making an offensive rally, taking a commanding 17-point lead at the end of the opening period.

Making a living inside the shaded area, Legaspi proved to be a monster that could not be stopped as he converted 10 of his 14 shots and finished with 23 points, alongside seven rebounds and one steal. Cadungog and Yu provided solid contributions as they got 12 and 10 markers respectively.

1978/1985 showed unwavering force to start the game as they buried shots from different range, taking an early lead at the end of the first quarter, 23-6.

As 1995 fought back in the second period, trimming the deficit to only a single digit at the 2:53 mark, 29-21, 1978/1985 regained momentum in the remaining minutes as Legaspi dropped five straight points including an and-one play, while Cadungog finished the first half with a fast break conversion that put 1978/1985 ahead by 13 points, 36-23.

Still dominating the action, 1978/1985 managed to stay on top by 15 in the 3:31 mark of the third canto. 1995 got its groove in the offensive end, pulling off a 9-0 run capped by Carpio's triple to come to within six points. However, Conwi's charities and Legaspi's baseline attack helped 1978/1985 carry a 10-point cushion into the final quarter, 50-40.

Aguila tried to lift his team back to within striking distance, but Legaspi and Yu suddenly erupted and combined for 12 points in exchange to 1995's one free throw that gave 1978/1985 a comfortable 18-point advantage with less than three minutes to play, 66-48. With their solid defense until the final buzzer, 1978/1985 sealed their debut victory.

Lacking of gunners, 1995 relied on Carpio who became the only player to enter double figures with 12 points.
