Defense wins championships as Bifrutas made some crucial stops in the end game, and converted a couple of points from the line, giving another loss to the skidding Eton Properties, 64-60 held at the Reyes gym in Mandaluyong.

Clinging to a six-point cushion, Marthy Pelayo made a basket underneath to push Bifrutas' lead to eight at 1:33 left on the clock.

Pelayo finished with a double-double made up of 13 points and 15 rebounds, together with a steal and a block. He also made a crucial free throw that sealed the four-point win for Bifrutas.

Down by eight, Henson Tan came alive when needed the most, burying back-to-back treys that trimmed the deficit to just two, 62-60, with 54 seconds remaining.

He had six of his total 12 points in those possessions, including a stop and pop three. Eton though came up short in pulling off a win as they missed their five attempts to tie or take the lead under the last thirty seconds.

Bifrutas, on the other hand, protected a two-point edge by making stops and hiting there shots from the foul line.

With the win last Sunday, Bifrutas is currently at 2-0 in the Kings of the Court STR8 | Corporate Division, while Eton Properties received its third straight loss without a win.

Bifrutas started the game with a 15-4 blitz behind Mark Brana’s eight first quarter points. He paced Bifrutas with 16 points and four boards.

When Brana sat down for a breather, Eton unleashed a nine-to-nothing run, finishing off the first down by a basket, 15-13.

Darrel Magsigay's steady hands kept Bifrutas afloat in the second quarter. Jerom Ong spearheaded Eton’s offense to tie the game at 27 apiece going to halftime.

Magsigay had his own 16 points for the winning team. Ong chipped in 12 for Eton.

Bifrutas went to their bigs in the third, but Eton’s adjustment on their defense made their opponent earned their points from the line, and they found success on it as Bifrutas missed a lot of bonus shots from the charity, making Eton tasted the lead for a short period of time going to the final frame, 45-43.

At the start of the fourth, Bifrutas countered by moving the basketball and had an 8-0 run, capped by Pelayo’s offensive board. Then later on, Bifrutas scored seven straight points to go up by double digit, 58-48 at 3:05 mark.
