The “court” is now in session for these law practitioners.

Practicing lawyers get a chance to take time off from law books and court resolutions for some weeknight basketball action through the Advocatus League – an eight-team invitational tournament staged by Kings of the Court | STR8 Philippines.

For the past years, KOTC | STR8 has put up competitive basketball tournaments for various professions and industries, such as real estate, engineering, medical, hotel – to name a few. This time, lawyers from organizations such as Meralco, OSG, DENR, Sigma Rho, IBP Rizal, Divina Law Offices, Puno Law Offices, and Vasig Law Offices get the rare opportunity to strut their stuff on the hardwood floor against their “pañeros”.

The league officially opened last February 26 at the Meralco Gym with the lone game between LEGALL.PH and the LitiGators.

According to Frederick Crisologo, who led LEGALL.PH to an 86-49 win over the LitiGators, revealed the composition of their squad which are mostly alumni of the Ateneo Law School.

“The law firms here are Puno and Puno, Vasig-Abarquez-Lumauig (VAL) and I think everyone else is scattered around. A lot of us here are Ateneo law graduates. A lot of us have worked together in Puno and Puno. Some of the players here from VAL Law were also from Puno and Puno,” said Crisologo, who finished with game-high 19 points spiked by five three-pointers.

“Every year, we usually play in the Ateneo Basketball League (ABL) and in other leagues. We make it a point that we join every year. When we heard that Kings of the Court was organizing something for the legal profession, we jumped on board immediately. I played in the One La Salle Alumni League (before). KOTC is very organized (and) very professional,” he added.

Their team name was derived from an online application developed by one of their players, Ely Vasig, together with a group of fellow lawyers. “LEGALL.PH is an application that would be available in the future to make lawyering available for all,” Crisologo explained.

While LEGALL.PH is still on a high after the rousing victory, the motivation for Crisologo and his team remains.

“To be honest, we’re just here to have fun. We went in here looking to have fun and bond with friends. The win is an extra thing for us,” shared Crisologo.

Atty. Jang Moreno, league founder and an avid basketball player himself, echoed the same sentiments. “The Advocatus League is all about healthy competition, so that as we challenge ourselves outside the legal arena, we build camaraderie based on our love for the game and respect for each other,” said Moreno.

For the LitiGators’ JD Garcia, the Advocatus League is a much-needed respite for people involved in the busy world of the law profession. Being a former player in past KOTC tournaments, Garcia and his teammates didn’t hesitate to join in the fray once the news of an all-lawyer basketball league broke out.

“We all like to play basketball, tapos hindi kami gaano nakakalaro given our profession. It was a good idea for us to join,” said Garcia, who chipped in six markers behind the team-high 16 points of Carlo Saulog.

“I think most of us, it’s not our first time to join (a league by) KOTC. Familiar na rin kami and I think most of us are. Marami na rin kasing sumasali dahil ang laki na ng KOTC,” he continued.
